Estate Plan Updates: Why Reviewing Your Plan Every Few Years Matters
One of the most common questions I hear from clients is:
“How often should I update my estate plan?”
The answer depends on the family and the circumstances, but in my experience as an Illinois estate planning attorney, most people benefit from reviewing their plan periodically as life changes.
Many clients think of estate planning as a one-time project:
- sign the documents,
- put them in a safe place,
- and never think about them again.
In reality, estate planning is often more like long-term maintenance.
Over time, life changes:
- children become adults;
- grandchildren are born;
- people move;
- homes are refinanced;
- retirement approaches;
- accounts are opened or closed;
- beneficiary designations change;
- relationships evolve;
- trustees or executors may no longer be the right fit.
Even when the legal documents themselves are still valid, the overall plan may no longer reflect a family’s current goals or asset structure.
At JPR Law, LLC, many estate plan updates are not dramatic overhauls. Often, they involve refining and adjusting an existing foundation that was already thoughtfully created years earlier.
In some situations, clients simply want to:
- update fiduciary appointments;
- review trust provisions;
- simplify administration for children;
- confirm assets are aligned properly;
- or make sure beneficiary designations still work with the overall plan.
One thing I have learned through estate administration is that small outdated details can sometimes create unnecessary complications later.
For example:
- an old beneficiary designation;
- a deceased successor trustee;
- an outdated guardian nomination;
- or a recently acquired asset that was never coordinated with the trust.
Most of these issues are fixable. The key is simply revisiting the plan before a crisis or emergency occurs.
As a virtual Illinois estate planning law firm, JPR Law works with many returning clients who appreciate being able to review and update their planning through a flexible Zoom-based process rather than starting from scratch.
I also think estate plan updates provide a valuable opportunity for families to revisit broader questions:
- Who would step in if something happened?
- Are the right people still serving in key roles?
- Have family dynamics changed?
- Does the current structure still make sense?
A good estate plan should evolve as life evolves.
Sometimes the goal of an update is not creating something entirely new. Sometimes it is simply making sure an existing plan still fits the life someone is living today.
